The Rising of a Soror Kandi Rang
I started my second life in April of 2007. It was kind of funny because I saw an online advertisement for a game by the name of IMVU. I joined, and a week later was bored of it. Within the first week of playing IMVU, an advertisement for SECOND LIFE came on. I decided to give it a chance. I joined SECOND LIFE and began the most wonderful experience of my life.
Not knowing to use an alias, I joined SECOND LIFE by the name of KANDI RANG. I was immediately loved by many, incorporating my RL personality in Kandi. I met many many other avatars, some worth keeping around, and some not. I began to pick up an interest for scripting, building, and texturing. Not enough to sell and make Lindens off of, but enough to individualize my own world. I began working as a host to make lindens to support my learning habit. While hosting, I met a young lady by the name of Jazmin. She had just become a resident, and was looking to do something productive with her SL. She would frequent the club, and liked the way I hosted and interacted with the patrons and how others interacted and responded to me. She asked me if I wanted to Co-find an in-world sorority. Being new residents, she and I, along with a couple other ladies, founded Alpha Chi Epsilon (AXE). Building, scripting, and texturing were put on hold and building the sorority on solid ground consumed my SL.
In the duration of being a sister of AXE, I met a lot of interesting people. I learned how NOT to treat people and ways to improve my SL as well as the sisterhood. I took daily mental notes. My RL father is an Omega man, and that is the way my siblings and I were raised. We understood the REAL meaning of having a non-bloodline family, the REAL meaning of service before self, and the REAL meaning of taking pride in yourself without being self-centered. THESE aspects are what I felt a sisterhood/brotherhood should be based upon, not the clique I was associated with. AXE had a brotherhood counterpart, Alpha Chi Sigma (AXS). I met the founding brothers of AXS, and was very impressed. I began receiving counsel from them on how we could improve AXE and be more like a RL sisterhood since they incorporated RL values in their brotherhood. In the process of my learning, I met one unique avatar that captured my heart.
May 2007, I met Derius Daviau. We spent sun rise to sun down together. We got married, and shortly after, as with a lot of marriages, we had a beautiful baby girl. We named her McKenzie, and she was very bubbly and made us laugh and become closer as a couple. Derius was the most perfect man in my eyes. He was a loving husband and devoted father. My SL couldn’t have been better. Derius always supported me and the sorority and when I had a bad day because a soror wanted to leave, he was there to welcome me with open arms. In RL, Derius and I decided to meet because we got along so well in SL, and we lived in the same state, so the cost would be very inexpensive. On his way to visit me, he was involved in a very bad auto accident and passed away. This took a heavy toll on me in a very negative way and I became distant and detached from the sorority. Even though they understood, I couldn’t put my one-hundred percent in it at the time. A few months afterwards, I was approached by one of the founding brothers of AXS. He inquired about branching off and founding a new sorority, where the values I was learning would be instilled, thus deriving a more RL sisterhood. Every day, for the majority of the day, we spent countless hours writing and modifying creeds, mission statements, analyzing colors, and distinct meanings, going over definitions, procedures, steps, applications, research, editing, recruiting, conversing, conferencing, you name it. This was such a blessing in disguise. This gave me motivation and empowered me to take my time and slowly mold a sisterhood into the exact mold I would take pride in and want to be a part of everyday. I made the next step and left AXE in March 2008. Along with me came four other sorors of AXE by the names of Keisha, CandySilk, Foxxy, and Destinee. Together, we collaborated and each sister brought her own talent, and we founded Phi Rho Epsilon (PhiRE).
In May 2008, PhiRE crossed its first line of sisters. The sorority took SL by surprise because PhiRE consisted of RL sorors, bachelor, master, and PhD recipients, thus bringing that maturity that didn’t come with a lot of other SL sororities. A few months later in September 2008, PhiRE branched off and formed a BETA chapter, founded by Cleopatra. Cleo did an amazing job on the chapter and when PhiRE came to an end in April 2010, she continued the core values and true meaning of sisterhood and founded Sigma Epsilon Nu (S.U.N.), along with two other distinguished and refined ladies. Being a Mentor in S.U.N. gives me great pride. In a nutshell, my whole SL has consisted of building, scripting, texturing, sororities, married life, parenthood, learning (as well as teaching), and forming life-long friends.
